A story that many families will feel are about them at one point or another. It's touching, it sweet and it's the best book I've read this year.

MODESTO, CALIF. --, UNITED STATES, June 25, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ -- MODESTO, Calif. – Author Ken White tells a classic coming of age story about a young boy on the cusp of becoming a teenager, who learns some tough lessons about life and the power of believing in his riveting work of fiction, “Getaway Day.”

White sets the scene in California in 1962 where 13-year-old Mikey Wright learns of his dying father’s dream to play catch with his idol, Yankee baseball legend, Mickey Mantle. In a desperate race against time to fulfill his father’s wish, Mikey discovers more about life, growing up, and about family, more than he could ever imagine.

“Getaway Day” is undoubtedly a heart-warming write-up that touches our hearts and stirs our souls. “I attended the event the book is based on. I had always wanted to write a story using the event as a backdrop. When I finally worked out the storyline of the father’s cancer and the father-son relationship, I knew I had the story I wanted to tell. I think readers will identify with the book because they have experienced something similar, or know somebody who has. And, if they love baseball, it will resonate more deeply still. Baseball was a big part of my life growing up. It continues to be important now,” shares White.

Bleeding Yankee Blue, an online blog, branded Ken’s novel to be “a story that many families will feel are about them at one point or another. It's touching, it sweet and it's the best book I've read this year.”

White hints that he is currently working on a sequel that will rejoin the book’s characters in 1969. “Mikey, the protagonist, will turn 21 that year. It will be his third year in college. And he will be dealing with the war in Vietnam and a number of other seminal events that shaped America and the world.”

Acquisitions Editor Aubrey Nicole Ventic is enthusiastic about the success of Ken’s book. “Ken is a truly gifted writer and we are so proud to have him as a part of the Tate family of authors. His story is one that touches base with grief, sadness, hope, and of letting go which a lot of people can truly relate to.”

Published by Tate Publishing and Enterprises, the book will be available upon its release, through bookstores nationwide, from the publisher at www.tatepublishing.com/bookstore, or by visiting barnesandnoble.com or amazon.com.

White recently retired from the worlds of advertising, corporate communications, and interactive entertainment to concentrate on writing and community service. He received his A.A. degree at Modesto Junior College, his B.A. and teaching credential at UC Davis, and his M.A. at San Francisco State University. He has taught mass communications and film appreciation at Modesto Junior College.

Born in Lathrop and raised in Modesto, California, Ken continues to live in his home town. He is married to Robin and has two adult step-sons, Tyler and Eric. He is the author of four novels, fourteen screenplays, two stage plays, a short story collection, and one sitcom pilot. Most of his stories are about his home town and the Central Valley heartland.
