Long Term Cancer Survivor Takes a Different Approach at the Cleveland Marathon to Raise Funds

CLEVELAND, OHIO, UNITED STATES, May 14, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ -- On Sunday, May 17, 2015, long term multiple myeloma survivor David Emerson will hand-cycle in the Cleveland Marathon to raise money for his non-profit organization, the Galen Foundation and PeopleBeatingCancer.org. Extensive nerve damage in his legs from radiation prevents him from running or walking in the race, but that won’t stop him from participating in order to get his message of hope out to cancer survivors.

In 1996, David was told that he should get his affairs in order after an extensive battle with multiple myeloma. Rather than give up, David turned to the Internet to do some research of his own, and ultimately found a cancer treatment that saved his life. He started the Galen Foundation in order to support cancer survivors and caregivers with information about topics not often discussed at the doctor’s office—treatment side effects, relative efficacy of treatment options, and nutritional factors—in order to empower patients and caregivers to make informed treatment choices.

Today, PeopleBeatingCancer.org serves 60,000 cancer survivors and their caregivers annually, focusing its efforts on promoting cancer information based on experience. The main initiative on the website is the “Cancer Answers” page, where visitors can come and find the top twelve concerns that cut across all cancer types—from insurance issues to the importance of getting a second opinion. David wants to make sure that, even if patients or caregivers have only a few minutes to look on the site, they will come away with information that is critical to the decisions they need to make. In addition, the website offers a full spectrum of information about the top twenty cancers, searchable by both cancer type and topic. If site visitors have questions or concerns, David responds within twenty-four hours to their comments through his Cancer Coaching initiative. The goal of the website is to be able to offer relevant information to cancer patients and caregivers at all different stages of the cancer process, in the hopes that the information found will lead to more informed treatment decisions and overall longer, healthier lives.

Please consider sponsoring David at this year’s Cleveland Marathon by making a donation through his Indiegogo page.
