Have you ever wanted to work in video games? Many EA interns go on to grow their careers at EA, and we’ll be looking at a few new faces that have recently joined EA in this series.

We sat down with a digital analyst based out of our EA Canada studio in Vancouver, where games like FIFA, UFC and NHL are developed to learn what it’s like to get your first chance to work in video games.

Working at EA has brought together Kiran Basra’s passions: sports, community, and technology. During her time as an intern with EA, Basra demonstrated the value of digital analytics and was active in her community, fundraising for charities and attending Women in Games Vancouver events.

Basra graduates this April from Simon Fraser University and we’re looking forward to getting her back in the fold at EA.

Where were you doing when you found out you would be receiving a scholarship from EA? I was sitting in a coffee shop trying to do homework as I waited anxiously to see what my Executive Director wanted to chat about.

How did you first get interested in videogames? My parents had an Intellivision when I was born, so I started playing that at a young age with my brother. Next was the shift to the computer and my parents had bought us Zelda on a floppy disk. My brother and I always played video games together as we got older on various consoles so it is something that has been a part of my life since I was born.

What have you had the most fun doing at EA? The most fun part about EA would have to be the amazing people that I got to work with every day. There were so many people with diverse backgrounds that I was always learning something new. I enjoyed playing soccer in the afternoon and meeting even more people through that, and there was always something exciting going on at EA in terms of a game launch or special event that brought the community together.

Do you have any advice for someone looking to break into the industry? Just apply and be open to new opportunities. Co-op is a wonderful way to work at EA and see if the industry or company is a good fit for you. Everyone was so helpful when I first became interested in working at EA and because of the size of the company, there are so many different positions available.

If you weren’t working in videogames, what would you be doing? I would likely be working in the not-for-profit sector or in the technology sector for a larger for-profit company. Just prior to EA I was looking to gain experience in a larger company and I was open to many different options.

What did you do after work to relax? Sports.

What platform do you prefer to play on? PS4.

What’s the first game you remember playing? Boxing on Intellivision.
