Lack of skilled cyber security professionals a major problem for Australian and New Zealand organisations

According to a recent report by ISACA, 85% of respondents in Australia and New Zealand believe there is a shortage of skilled cyber security professionals.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, January 28, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ -- According to a recent report by ISACA, 85% of respondents in Australia and New Zealand believe there is a shortage of skilled cyber security professionals.

“A skilled workforce is critical to driving a cyber secure organisation forward,” says Alan Calder, founder and executive chairman of IT Governance. “An understanding of cyber threats is not enough; organisations need qualified and experienced workers to implement and deploy effective information security management systems.”

While some universities and high schools are beginning to educate their students in cyber security and ethical hacking, there is still a massive gap between the number of qualified professionals available and the number that industry needs.

The report also found that 70% of respondents feel cyber attacks are one of the three biggest threats facing organisations today, and 34% see a physical attack (terrorist attack or act of war) as on par with a cyber attack.

“With the growing threat of cyber attack, a significant increase in high-profile data breaches and an increased awareness of cyber crime, organisations throughout the Asia-Pacific region will need to significantly bolster their cyber security posture if they are to stay afloat in the next two-to-three years,” Calder comments.

ISO 27001 is increasingly recognised as the go-to information security standard for cyber security best practice. According to the ISO Survey 2013, certifications to the Standard in New Zealand grew 140% in 2013 compared to 2012.
