Mr. Ahern reports that all in all, the meeting was upbeat, but cautious. “Trucking, in general, is doing well,” Ahern said. He also stated, “The smaller carriers are being forced to sell, or liquidate, because they can’t secure the working capital to comply with the various mandates from the Department of Transportation. The larger trucking companies are getting larger, and the smaller companies are getting smaller.”
Mr. Ahern discussed in detail the continuing dilemma with independent contractor situations as well as the driver shortage. He reviewed some of the updated challenges to the independent contractor and then reviewed IRS guidelines. He explained to members of the Connecticut Trucking Association that to survive and thrive in trucking, they must do the following: plan their expenses to their profits, avoid leveraging their companies with too much equipment debt, treat each truck and driver as a profit center, and change - and continue to change - their driving recruiting processes and business models. As a highly regarding figure in the trucking and transportation industry, Mr. Ahern regularly weighs in on hot topics, and he was honored to be a part of the Connecticut Trucking Association event.
