Kohler Unveils Environmental Product Declarations to Support Green Building Efforts

Kohler Co. announces that it now offers Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for a broad range of its sanitary ware products.

KOHLER, WI, USA, October 22, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Kohler Co. announces that it now offers Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for a broad range of its sanitary ware products, helping customers make informed, environmentally conscious choices when selecting plumbing products.

EPDs are developed by manufacturers based on life cycle inventories and provide quantitative, third-party-certified details of a product’s projected environmental impact from cradle to grave. Some manufacturer EPDs use industry averages in their calculations, while Kohler utilizes a best-practice approach that compiles company-specific data to calculate the footprint of each product over its complete lifecycle. By using this method, Kohler can use the data to improve its manufacturing operations and products from an environmental standpoint.

“To further Kohler’s commitment to environmental sustainability, we have created a systematic method for mapping our manufacturing process to pinpoint the environmental impact of our products,” said Rob Zimmerman, senior channel manager - sustainability. “These product overviews allow consumers and builders to specify products that are more sustainable and help new construction meet green building certification standards.”

The EPDs include both a transparency summary and a detailed description certified by Underwriters’ Laboratories (UL-Environment) to help facilitate product comparisons. They will be available for hundreds of KOHLER sanitary ware products made in North America.

The availability of EPDs coincides with the newest version of the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) rating system from the U.S. Green Building Council, which awards points based on using products with third-party certified EPDs. Kohler’s EPDs earn up to two points in the LEED v4 rating system.

The EPDs will be available online and by request. To request an EPD for a KOHLER product, go to kohler.com/EPD and identify the selected product name and model number.
