Texas A&M University Presents Civil Rights Symposium

Global Citizens and Equality: 50 Years After the 1964 Civil Rights Act

FORT WORTH, TX, UNITED STATES, October 23, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Texas A&M University will host a major interdisciplinary symposium commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 on Thursday, Nov. 6 in Rudder Theatre. The symposium, “Global Citizens and Equality: 50 Years After the 1964 Civil Rights Act,” will more critically interrogate this momentous piece of legislation, through research and scholarship––a hallmark of Texas A&M University’s flagship mission.

During the symposium, speakers and panelists from multiple disciplines will examine various research issues surrounding civil rights and equality in many U.S. institutions, including those considered within the 1964 Civil Rights Act, such as race and gender in education and employment, as well as those not considered, such as disparities in the criminal justice system, LGBTQ issues, and immigration issues.

Distinguished speakers include renowned legal scholar, Professor Patricia J. Williams, James L. Dohr Professor of Law at Columbia University, who will deliver the keynote address. Additional notable speakers and panelists include Texas A&M Professor Joe R. Feagin, Ella C. McFadden Professor in Sociology, Mary Romero, Professor of Justice Studies and Social Inquiry at Arizona State University, Sharon M. Collins, Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Illinois, Chicago, Dean of the College of Public Policy and Peter Flawn Professor of Demography at the University of Texas at San Antonio, and many others.

With leadership from the Office of the Vice President and Associate Provost for Diversity and the Texas A&M University School of Law, this is a collaborative event with support and sponsorship from across the university campus, including the Bush School of Government and Public Service, the College of Education and Human Development, the Division of Finance and Administration, the College of Liberal Arts, the Dwight Look College of Engineering, the Office of the Dean of Faculties, the Health Science Center, Information Technology, the Office of the Vice President for Research, and the Race and Ethnic Studies Institute.

As this past year’s celebration commemorating Texas A&M’s 50 Years of Inclusion illustrated, our university has been greatly enhanced by an increasingly inclusive community of students, faculty, staff, and administrators. This symposium continues the spirit of that celebration.
