Veterans History Project Experiencing War Series Presents “Staff Picks”
The Veterans History Project (VHP) today launches the latest edition of the Experiencing War series with collections selected for their personal resonance by members of the VHP staff. These stories, among more than 95,000 in the project’s archives, are available at www.loc.gov/vets/.
"Stories from the Stacks: VHP Staff Picks" helps shine a light on the compelling nature of the project by showcasing the wide range of wartime experience documented within the archive and sharing many stories that have never previously been featured. Whether facilitating volunteers’ participation in the Project or actually receiving and processing donated collections, VHP staff handle upwards of 100 – 150 new individual veterans’ accounts per week.
Featured stories include veterans Julia Rae Schembre, a musician who served with multiple Air Force bands over the course of her 23-year career, and Tim O’Brien, author of "The Things They Carried," a collection of short stories about a platoon of American soldiers in the Vietnam War.
Additional collections include Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) and Heather Sandler, a Naval Aviation Ordnanceman who served aboard the aircraft carriers USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Harry Truman.
Created by law and through unanimous support from the United States Congress in 2000, the Veterans History Project collects, preserves and makes accessible the first-hand remembrances of America’s war veterans from WWI through the current conflicts, so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war.
