ConnectSafely.org to participate in Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Istanbul

ISTANBUL, TURKEY, September 1, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ -- ConnectSafely.org, a leading non-profit Internet safety organization, today announced its planned participation at the 9th annual Internet Governance Forum (IGF), September 2-5 in Istanbul, Turkey. Co-Directors Larry Magid and Anne Collier will be hosting workshops on the topics of “Protecting Child Safety and Child Rights” (September 3, 2014, 9:00am-10:30am, Room 7) and “Empowering Global Youth Through Digital Citizenship” (September 4, 2014, 2:30pm-4pm, Room 1).

The Empowering Global Youth Through Digital Citizenship workshop is a youth-driven discussion that Anne has co-organized with colleagues in many countries since the 2010 IGF in Vilnius, Lithuania. This highly participatory, ongoing discussion features youth perspectives on the nature and practice of citizenship in a digital age and networked world. The goal each year, in each new IGF host country, is to increase youth-adult communication on this vital topic and grow adult understanding of youth perspectives on Internet governance and social change with social media.

The Protecting Child Safety and Child Rights workshop is a follow up to a session from the 2013 Internet Governance Forum that explored the conflict between child protection and child rights. This year the workshop evolves to explore how both rights and safety can be protected. It is relevant to Internet governance because children are stakeholders who are often left out of discussions.

Magid will also participate in two additional workshops: “A safe, secure, sustainable Internet and the role of stakeholders” and “Child Online Protection: Roles and Responsibilities, Best Practices and Challenges (Host Country Session).” Links to all of ConnectSafely’s workshops are at www.ConnectSafely.org/igf2014/

The IGF was established by the World Summit on the Information Society to draw together a broad community of internet stakeholders, including governments, the private sector, civil society, academia, etc., to address evolving questions related to internet governance, internet freedom and cyber security.
