QUINCY, MA, USA, August 14, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ -- To help advance its goal of sharing resources for nutritional awareness and education, NuVal, LLC has partnered with Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan. Gleaners Food Bank last year provided more than 41 million pounds of emergency food in five counties. This new partnership allows recipients of Gleaners’ food to better evaluate the nutritional content of food available to them.
“In addition to providing relief from hunger, the food bank has several programs that help individuals choose, prepare and eat more healthful foods than they might normally consume,” says Gerry Brisson, President of Gleaners Community Food Bank. “With NuVal’s partnership support, we have another important tool that clients can use to make more informed food decisions.”

The food bank will include educational information and materials about NuVal’s Nutritional Scoring System in its nutrition education programs and in its food ordering system. Practical application of the NuVal Scoring System will be demonstrated during Cooking Matters™ grocery store tours at local Meijer’s supermarkets where participants will learn how to read NuVal scores and use them to make more nutritious, better-for-you food choices.

“The Gleaners partnership paves the way for proactive food education that promotes health and wellness to a community which stands to benefit greatly. We are very pleased to be working with Gleaners,” says Mike Nugent, NuVal’s General Manager.

About NuVal LLC
The NuVal Nutritional Scoring System is a unique food labeling system which ranks all foods between 1 and 100; the higher the score, the better the nutrition. NuVal Scores can be found in nearly 2,000 supermarkets, as well as in schools, hospitals and other health facilities. The NuVal System is endorsed by the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM), and a recent Harvard School of Public Health study showed that those who ate food with more favorable NuVal Scores had a lower risk of chronic disease and had a better chance of living a longer, healthier life. NuVal LLC is a joint venture formed in 2008 by Topco Associates, LLC, and Griffin Hospital. Learn more at www.nuval.com.

About Gleaners Community Food Bank
For more than 35 years, Gleaners Community Food Bank has been "nourishing communities by feeding hungry people.” Last year, Gleaners distributed 41 million pounds of emergency food to more than 550 partner soup kitchens, shelters and pantries in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Livingston and Monroe counties. Gleaners helps to alleviate hunger by providing the equivalent of nearly 100,000 meals per day to people who otherwise cannot afford the food they need. Of every dollar donated, Gleaners uses 94 cents for food and food programs. One dollar provides three meals for a hungry neighbor. Learn more at www.gcfb.org.
