The Cyber Essentials scheme, which was officially launched on 5 June 2014 by the UK Government, was developed to keep UK business safe. It aims to offer a baseline for cyber security and sets out the key steps to manage cyber risks.

The Cyber Essentials scheme applies to small- and medium-sized organisations and large companies alike. While it doesn’t replace international information security frameworks or standards, notably ISO27001, it makes the implementation of cyber security more accessible for smaller companies. British organisations that meet the assessment requirements of the scheme will be awarded a badge (or ‘mark’) to demonstrate compliance. There are two levels of compliance: Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus.
