Hosalkar Remains Diligent in Children's Orthopaedic Matters

It has been a year since Dr. Hosalkar helped launch the Center for Hip Preservation and Children’s Orthopaedics’ in San Diego, California.

VISTA, CA, USA, July 25, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Dr. Hosalkar is part of a proud team determined to improve the lives and comfort of their patients. As an orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Hosalkar examines, diagnoses, and treats diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. If an injury or disease prevents patients from moving, Dr. Hosalkar uses surgery or other forms of treatment for correction and rehabilitation.

Since 2009, Dr. Hosalkar has worked with children and their families around the San Diego, California area. Prior to 2009, he was a surgeon and faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania. “I enjoyed taking a more active role in health and medicine after moving to California. I am passionate about joint preservation, trauma care, deformity correction, neuro-muscular orthopedics and children’s orthopedic problems. It is why I was so eager to be part of the launch of the Center for Hip Preservation and Children’s Orthopaedics’ last year,” says Dr. Hosalkar.

In one year’s, time, Dr. Hosalkar has treated many young patients. The center treats children as young as infants suffering with conditions they were born with and older children whose disease or injuries were previously undiagnosed or recently developed. “Some children come in with injuries as a result of overusing muscles and sports injuries, but other patients come in without understanding the cause of their pain,” explains Dr. Hosalkar.

The medical center treats a number conditions including hip dysplasia, Femoroacetabular impingement, Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis, Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease and Avascular Necrosis of the hip. “What many patients and their families don’t realize, are how many pain-causing conditions are common, but are overlooked unless the pain becomes severe,” says Hosalkar.

Hosalkar offers Hip Impingement as an example. According to WebMD, “You can have hip impingement for years and not know it, because it is often not painful in its early stages.” However, the causes of hip impingement are the result of deformity of the hip socket, or the ball at the top of the femur. Even more troubling is that it may be the result of a condition of blood loss seen in children called Perthes Disease.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons describes the disease as a loss of blood supply to the hip, which if left untreated, results in the death of the femur bone’s “ball.” Hosalkar explains that while Perthes Disease is not really a disease, the title remains, and symptoms include mild pain over weeks or months.

Dr. Hosalkar understands the tendency for parents to disregard children’s complaints about bone or joint pain. Mayoclinic.org recommends parents get children evaluated if pain persists after a nights’ sleep, pain is associated with an injury, or severe enough that it disrupts the child’s normal activities. “Growing pains” are a commonly accepted part of aging, but persistent pain may be the result of a musculoskeletal problem. Even benign pains can last for weeks, months, or years. Many orthopaedic doctors and surgeons, like Hosalkar, recognize that problems seem more common in girls.

Dr. Hosalkar is proud to continue his work at the Center for Hip Preservation and Children’s Orthopaedics’. He hopes the facility continues to make a positive change in children’s lives by eliminating pain and helping children regain proper body function and quality of life.
