Debate Brews on Legalization of Raw Milk

Share |

Nov. 4, 2010 /EIN Presswire/-- Some consumers want the freedom to drink natural, locally grown milk instead of industrialized, pasteurized milk, and that desire is is spurring debate against laws that prohibit the sale of raw, unpasteurized milk.

Proponents of raw milk are willing to take on the possible dangers of drinking the beverage because they believe it is a healthier, better-tasting option. They also argue cheese, yogurt and ice cream made from raw milk has a richer taste than products made with pasteurized milk.

A group of legislators in Wyoming are pushing for the legalization of raw milk sales within the next year, but health officials oppose the effort, saying legalized raw milk sales would lead to more food-borne illnesses.

Raw milk can contain harmful bacteria like salmonella and E.coli and has been tied to several outbreaks of food-borne illnesses this year.
