FDA Needs $5 Billion to Ensure Food Safety

Share |

Nov. 4, 2010 /EIN Presswire/-- The Food and Drug Administration needs approximately $5 billion to ensure the safety of the nation's food supply, according to David Acheson, former FDA Associated Commissioner for Foods.

The food industry has been hit with a rise in outbreaks of food-borne illnesses in beef and poultry, causing increasing concerns about regulatory agencies receiving proper funding. With the change in legislative power to Republicans in the House of Representatives, the FDA will not be granted an increase in funding anytime soon.

Acheson feels the United States food supply is one of the safest and that the adoption of the new food safety bill would help keep it that way. He also noted the FDA is making progress on food safety by paying more attention to imported goods, making more thorough inspections and using more advanced technologies.
