Study Finds No Alzheimer's Benefit in Fish Oil Supplements
Nov. 3, 2010 /EIN Presswire/ -- A study led by Dr. Joseph Quinn, a neurologist at Oregon Health and Science University, has found no particular benefit to Alzheimer's patients from the use of fish oil supplements.
Quinn's study involved 300 volunteers, some of whom had Alzheimer's and others who served as controls at 51 research sites in the U.S. No difference in mental testing was recorded between the two groups, one of which took fish oil supplements each day for 18 months.
Animal and smaller human studies had suggested that the supplements would provide some benefit to improving dementia symptoms.
One possibility for the result, Quinn suggested, was that the Alzheimer's patients tested were too far along to reap any benefit. The amyloid deposits that characterize Alzheimer's may be too entrenched by the time patients begin showing symptoms.
