Light Coffee Drinkers also at Risk of Stroke
Nov. 2. 2010 /EIN Presswire/ -- There are heavy coffee drinkers, one-a-day coffee drinkers and decaf drinkers. Which group bears the greatest risk of stroke?
According to a new study published in the November issue of Neurology, occasional coffee drinkers double their stroke risk in the hour after consuming a cup of coffee. But that risk reverses within two hours.
Scientists theorize that those who drink coffee more frequently develop a tolerance for short-term effects of caffeine. There were no reported similar risks from drinking tea or caffeinated soda, drinks that generally have lower caffeine content than coffee.
The scientific community shares conflicting views over the risks of caffeine intake in general and coffee in particular. Some believe that caffeine's effect on blood pressure increases stiffness in the arteries. Other studies shed doubt on those concerns, and in fact suggest that coffee reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
