SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA, USA, April 21, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Santa Monica, California--- April 21, 2014---California Lawyers for the Arts is pleased to present a unique, day-long publishing program, "Publishing Contracts and Intellectual Property Issues in Publishing," which will feature two preeminent legal authorities in the publishing community, Jonathan Kirsch, Esq. and Paul Levine, Esq. This program is ideal for attorneys involved in the publishing field as well as writers, editors, literary agents and others who want updated and insightful information about the intricacies of publishing agreements.

The program will take place on Saturday, April 26, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Fowler Museum at UCLA. California Lawyers for the Arts is a California State Bar approved provider of California minimum continuing legal education. The program will begin with a presentation by Mr. Kirsch, who will discuss the standard components of a publishing deal, with a focus on real world examples from sample agreements. Mr. Kirsch's presentation will also address recent changes in practices due to developments in law, technology, and publishing markets. In the second half of the program, Mr. Levine will provide an in-depth explanation and analysis of the four most common compensation arrangements for authors: advances, royalties, first and second serialization rights, and best-seller bonuses.

Jonathan Kirsch, Esq. is a publishing and intellectual property attorney based in Los Angeles, an expert witness on publishing industry matters, an Adjunct Professor on the faculty of New York University’s Professional Publishing Institute, and a lecturer and consultant on publishing matters. Kirsch’s books include Kirsch’s Handbook of Publishing Law and Kirsch’s Guide to the Book Contract, both of which are now in revision for a new and updated single-volume edition from Silman James Press. Kirsch is also the book editor of The Jewish Journal, a longtime book reviewer for the Los Angeles Times, and the author of 13 books of history and biography, including the newly published The Short, Strange Life of Herschel Grynszpan: A Boy Avenger, a Nazi Diplomat, and a Murder in Paris (W. W. Norton/Liveright).

Paul S. Levine, Esq. wears two hats: he is a lawyer and a literary agent. Mr. Levine has practiced entertainment law for over 30 years, specializing in the representation of writers, producers, actors, directors, composers, musicians, artists, authors, photographers, galleries, publishers, developers, production companies and theater companies in the fields of motion pictures, television, interactive multimedia, live stage, recorded music, concerts, the visual arts, publishing, and advertising.
