Sioux Falls, SD— Rubber cancer awareness bracelets are causing quite the stir in schools across the United States. The “I Love Boobies” breast cancer awareness bracelets have caused heated debates at schools in California, Colorado, Idaho, Florida, Wisconsin and more recently, South Dakota, as reported by USA Today.

Keep A Breast Foundation, a non-profit organization that seeks to increase breast cancer awareness among young people, created the awareness bracelets. The accessory sold for about $4, which benefits the foundation’s programs.

Baltic High School in South Dakota recently became the latest school to ban the bracelets. Baltic High School Principal Jim Aisenbrey said, “When we had an assembly the first day of school, I basically told the students we are not insensitive to the cause. I think everybody in the gym, including myself, has had a family member or relative or friend who has dealt with the issue. I do think there are more proper ways to bring this plight to the attention of people, and I don't think this is a proper way."

The bracelets were designed to spark discussions that may not have otherwise been brought up, potentially saving someone’s life.

The founder of the Keep A Breast Foundation defended the bracelet’s controversial message, “That’s the whole idea, its getting people to talk about breast cancer, its getting people to share their feelings about how this disease has impacted their life. The bracelet is doing what it’s meant to do—its making people talk.”
