Asbestos abatement project planned for the historical Willis B. Boyer ship

After the historical William B. Boyer ship in Toledo, Ohio was given $200,000 in federal aid stimulus money for asbestos cleanup, United States Senators John McCain and Tom Coburn called the abatement project as wasteful.

However, the ship – which will later become part of the Great Lakes Maritime Museum – will soon get the cleanup it deserves, and will rid any risk of asbestos-related diseases that the public may contract as a result.

Asbestos is a highly hazardous fiber, commonly used in the construction of many older structures. If disturbed, asbestos can become airborne, posing a very serious health risk to those exposed, causing several highly dangerous illnesses, including mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is the rarest form of asbestos-related cancer, affecting 3,000 Americans every year. This inoperable cancer affects the internal linings of the lung, heart and abdominal cavities. Palliative treatment such as chemotherapy, radiation and surgery are most often used.

The funding to remove asbestos from the historical ship is part of a fund set aside to renovate historic structures.
