Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Fdn Advisory Committee Member Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, UNITED STATES, November 17, 2016 /EINPresswire.com/ -- JOHNNY UNITAS GOLDEN ARM EDUCATIONAL FDN ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEMBER
HONORED WITH LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
BALTIMORE, MD (11/17/16) --- Since 1987, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award1 is presented at the end of each season to the nation’s top college quarterback, based on his accomplishments both on and off the field. The award was created to honor the legacy of Johnny Unitas, promote the game of football and provide scholarships to deserving young athletes.
The namesake of the Golden Arm Award has a storied history. Johnny Unitas was an 18-year veteran of the NFL, who played his collegiate career at the University of Louisville before joining the Baltimore Colts in 1958. His career passing figures include 2,830 pass completions for 40,239 yards, 290 touchdowns and throwing a touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games.
Prior to his passing in 2002, Johnny Unitas was actively involved in the Golden Arm Award and the quarterback selection process. In order to fully capture the essence of this award, Unitas chose an advisory committee to assist in the overall decision process. The committee is comprised of former sports legends, general managers, current sports analysts and some of the nation’s well-known sportscasters.
Among them is Baltimore great, Brooks Robinson. Nicknamed the "Human Vacuum Cleaner," Robinson has won 16 Gold Glove Awards, 15 All-Star selections, two World Series titles and an American League Most Valuable Player Award, while spending his 23 seasons in Baltimore. Earlier this week, Robinson was honored as the best defensive third baseman of all time, providing the bedrock for his Lifetime Achievement Award. To see more, please visit: http://atmlb.com/2ga68q1.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, the Golden Arm Award sponsors and the rest of Johnny Unitas Advisory Committee members, we want to congratulate Brooks Robinson on this well-deserved and highly-regarded award. Like Unitas, Robinson was a one-of-a-kind athlete and his accomplishments on and off the playing field are truly remarkable.
